Hengqin Tax Authorities Mark Five Years with Digital Cross-Border Tax Services

Five years into the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone, the Hengqin tax authority has made substantial digital upgrades to cross-border tax handling. It set up a dedicated Hong Kong and Macao service area with bilingual guides and cross-border counters, moved Macao self-service terminals into Hengqin and placed mainland smart tax kiosks in Macao to create a five-minute tax circle so businesses and residents need not travel back and forth. Online it is easier still: cross-border RMB UnionPay electronic tax payments and bank-side enquiry payments are both available, all Hengqin tax matters can now be handled without face-to-face contact, and 99 percent of Macao-related business is processed online. Newly launched AI smart approval has cut approval time for high-frequency items such as invoice category verification to one minute, 98 percent faster than the traditional model. Over the five years, Macao residents' individual income tax benefits have reached more than 2,200 people with over 120 million yuan of relief, more than 71,000 Macao residents pay social insurance in Zhuhai each year, and social insurance processing time has been cut by over 80 percent.
